October 2013

After painting like crazy all summer I took a new full time art teaching job, so the paint brushes have been idle for the last 6 weeks.  I am enjoying my new job and hope to get into a routine of painting some during the school year.

It will be a month or so before I get new photos taken of my new paintings from spring and summer, but I do have plenty of work.
I will be having a show of this said work at The Art Center in Corvallis Oregon, July 2014.  I am pleased to have that on the calendar and even more pleased to have the work 90% completed.

I love teaching and it pays the bills, but I also love to paint and get lost in creative thought and problem solving.

Wish me luck in finding a productive balance in both parts of my life.

I have been working up a storm since school let out.  I call it "my organized and German way," others might call it....strong work ethic or driven...?

Anyway the Visual Chronicle of Portland is accepting submissions this summer and I finally read the directions and followed the guidelines.  Usually that is a little hard for me to devote my precious, precious time to make art in a way that does not quite suit my particular desire of subject or medium.  This time I obeyed.
They want work on paper - check
They want work referring to Portland neighborhoods- check

So I returned to one of my favorite places in Portland and took reference pictures, and entered my studio and got to work.  The fun part in my mind is that I have photographed and painted this locale 10 years ago and 20 years ago.  I like it, it is weird and magical.
What a set up.
Here they are.

I wanted to show the new larger paintings together and below that, share some of the smaller ones that include ideas that led to this work or tangents along the way.

I have applied for a couple opportunities recently requiring an artist statement and found I needed to rethink what I am doing as it has evolved.  The landscape/environment has become more dominant in the paintings.  I attribute that to the fact that I am a lover of the Pacific Northwest and have hiked lots and camped in many places of dramatic beauty.  These places do feed my soul and it should be no surprise to me (though it is!) that these places are appearing as the locales of my other personal symbology.  And, there is definitely something about all the fencing and netting.  Universally we want to contain and protect, hold in and keep out.  I think it is almost an obsession....almost.
Hey....they are all self-portraits or fragments of memories.
Enough words, here you go.

NEW...LARGER PAINTINGS

At the advice of an acquaintance/artist I took some of my newer work and enlarged it from 18"x24" to 36"x 48".  This gave me the opportunity to make adjustments and fine tune the images.  I found that I really enjoyed the process and am thrilled with the results.
The new size was also out of my range for photographic lighting control so that gave me the impetus to hire a professional (Dan Kvitka), who was extremely helpful and did a beautiful job.

Here they are...in their larger glory with the "study" version next to them for comparison.
