statement:
My new work is simpler in focus and composition. The square format featuring a central image with a horizon line/landscape has become my system within to explore and create.
One way to think about this work is, the landscape is the performance stage in my mind and the stacked images are my thoughts as they come arrange, stay for awhile, then break apart for a new configuration.
Our lives are provisional, our influence and evidence of our existence is limited and fleeting. I am drawn to the images of time, weathered rocks, clouds, temporary sculptures, debris, furniture, buildings and barriers. I delight in the contrast and contradiction of icons and materials from vastly differing periods and places.
All my “constructs” are paintings informed by images from my photographic collection. The vignettes are personally meaningful to me in a literal or associative context. They begin from a personal place and are completed using formal principles.
As an artist I am restless unless I am growing challenging my skills and understandings. In this series I have enjoyed expanding my color palette and playing with acrylic and the velvet flatness of “Flashe.”
All the paintings happen to be 24"x24" - which I found to be the sweet spot for scale of the imagery.
